Warm Weather Fitness and My UXF Experience

It's finally feeling like spring in Boston!  I've been waiting for this weather for months and SO excited that it's finally here.  A big reason why??

Warmer temps = road race season!

Even though I sucked it up and ran a road race in cold November weather last year, I much prefer running outside in shorts and a tank.  Luckily I was able to this past weekend!

I ran my 2nd 5k of the year on Saturday - the Marine Corps Honor Run 5k - which is a really cool race along Carson Beach in South Boston... made even cooler by the fact that my 14-month old nieces participated in it too.  They carb-loaded with Goldfish and Gerber Puffs before "racing" in their double stroller with my brother and sister-in-law.

Buckled in and ready to run

I'm still after my goal of beating my 5K PR from years ago (23:51), so I've started incorporating more fartleks, sprints and (now that it's warm...) stadium stair workouts in my weekly routine.

Word of advice - running 30 sections worth of stadium stairs the day before a road race is NOT a good idea.  Within the first 1/4 mile of the race, my quads and calves were already fatiguing.  Never a fun time.

I managed to finish at 24:20, which I was happy with, and was able to cheer on my family and boyfriend (also running) as they crossed the finish line.

Remembering fallen Marines at the Marine Corps Honor Run

Another reason why I love warmer weather?  Outdoor boot camps!  I am coordinating a couple of them at work and will be participating in an outdoor blogger boot camp this weekend, courtesy of Blog and Tweet Boston.

So far, I've joined in on a couple of Blog and Tweet Boston's free blogger events... the 1st was at Pure Barre Boston (which I wrote about here) and the 2nd was a UXF class at Boston Sports Club on Boylston St. last month.

According to BSC's website, UXF is a cross-training workout that blends strength training and cardio conditioning to improve flexibility, agility, strength and endurance.  The workouts involve short bursts of high-intensity, timed exercises followed by rest periods.  This is similar to how I've structured total body conditioning classes that I've taught throughout the years, so I was really excited to try it out and see someone else's style.

warming up

In our UXF class, we started with a dynamic warm-up, some core and agility work, then were shown 5 different exercises that we had to do for 60 seconds each with a brief (~15 sec) rest in between each one for transitioning to the next station.  We had to count total number of repetitions performed for all 5 exercises and write down that number on a big, white board at the end of each circuit.

agility ladder drills

We did a total of 3 circuits and had to try and beat our number each time.  It's funny, although I do tend to have a competitive streak, its more so with myself than with other people.  You better believe I wasn't going to let my numbers drop as the circuits went on!

I love this pic... Bloggers in motion...

I really enjoyed the class and thought that the instructors were very motivating (SO helpful for that 3rd circuit!).  The class is offered as part of a 4-week program at BSC, in which registered members meet 2x/week for an hour (there is a fee to join this program).  I like that the class size is limited to a small group, which makes it feel less like a typical group ex class and more like personalized small group training.

My "concentration" face

The website mentioned that "UXF offers a unique set of training tools designed to challenge the status quo of conventional fitness equipment.  TRX, battle ropes and sometimes even truck tires and sleds are used along with plyometric exercises to create a balanced workout where you safely progress at your own pace."

I was a little bummed that we didn't use any of the equipment mentioned but maybe it isn't available at the Boylston St. BSC.  Plus, I'm guessing since this was an introductory class they wanted to keep the exercises, and equipment, to just the basics which I can certainly understand.

Bottom line, I got a great workout and would definitely recommend UXF classes as a way to shake up your normal routine.  Here is a listing of all the Sports Clubs in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. area that offer UXF as part of their programming.

Looking forward to shaking up MY routine this weekend with Boot Camp!

What are some fun, new workouts you've recently experimented with to change up your exercise routine??

My Life in Pictures... and a Boston Strong Outlook

Ahhh... It feels good to be contributing to Fitness MoeJo again :)

Due to some personal obligations and increasingly busier work hours between my 3 jobs (which was not only exhausting but leaving me with very little free time) I decided to take a bit of a hiatus from my blog over the past two months.

I started getting to the point where just thinking about what to post - not to mention WHEN I'd have the time to post - started stressing me out, I knew it was time to step back and re-evaluate priorities.

Since then, I was promoted at one job- which enabled me to step down from another (woo!); managed to streamline my new (2-job!) schedule to be more aligned with my preferred work/life arrangement; and made some fun, new discoveries in the very different worlds of fitness, fashion and... um, fermented stuff ;)

Finally, I am in a place where blogging can organically fit into my life instead of trying to force it to fit.

I am a crazy, fanatic picture-taker (my friends don't call me "InstaMoe" for nothing!), so I'm going to let my lovely iPhone pics from the past couple of months give a taste of what I've been up to...

The 2013 Boston Marathon

I'd be remiss if I didn't share some of my thoughts on what happened two weeks ago today.  The events that took place at the Boston Marathon hit very close to home for me... both literally and figuratively.

As a Boston resident and Boston Marathon runner who used to live (and work) on the marathon route and grew up watching the runners every year, the bombings affected me deeply.  Such a happy tradition in Massachusetts is never going to be the same; however, I have no doubts that this great city will find ways to come back stronger than ever.

Boston is such a small place and although I don't personally know anyone who was hurt or killed, many of my friends do.  Other friends and co-workers of mine were dangerously close to where the bombs detonated but were thankfully uninjured.

I've been in the Boylston Street area a few times now that it has opened back up to the public.  My boyfriend and I took a walk past the memorial site after the Red Sox game last weekend.  It literally takes your breath away.  We signed a couple of the memorial posters and took some time walking around.  Here are a couple of pictures that resonated with me...

I was back this past weekend to patronize some of the area businesses that had been shut down for a week.  It's an eery feeling to walk by the boarded up Marathon Sports (in front of the 1st bombing site) and The Forum restaurant (in front of 2nd bombing site) but encouraging to see all of the foot traffic and Boston Strong signs.

As I was getting myself pumped up for the B.A.A 5K race (always held the day before the Marathon), I started thinking that I want to run Boston again.  My dream would  be to qualify... only caveat is that would involve shaving about 49 minutes off my time!  But  hey, as they say... "If no one is laughing at your dreams, you're not dreaming big enough."

Finishing the 2010 Boston Marathon with my BFF... one of the best experiences of my life...

Post-Marathon, the idea of running Boston again is now cemented in my head... It will happen!  Although I'd LOVE to qualify for Boston 2014, that would involve running a qualifying time by September... annnd that may be a bit ambitious!  Still may run one in the fall for the experience though.

It's nothing short of amazing and inspiring to see all of the other races across the country - and across the globe - being run in memory of Boston.  I am even more inspired by the Marathon bombing survivors who are not letting their injuries, amputations, etc. get in the way of living their lives.  They inspire me to be a better person, remind me to focus on what's important and motivate me to live life to the fullest... In other words, to be Boston Strong :)

My Pure Barre Experience

Since I'm all about stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to fitness, I decided to try something completely different from my norm.  "Barre" classes have been gaining popularity recently and I had been hearing about Pure Barre fitness classes for a while now... so when I discovered that a complimentary class was being offered at the Boston location to local bloggers, organized by Blog and Tweet Boston, I figured I'd give it a go...

First off, I have to say that Blog and Tweet Boston is such a fun concept!  It was started by Boston Bachelorette and I Take Pictures of My Food... they organize fun monthly events for Boston bloggers relating to food, fitness and everything in between.  This was my first event with them and I definitely look forward to attending more!

I had been down and out with a sinus infection that week and was nervous that I wouldn't feel better in time for the class.  However, I had my energy back by the time Saturday rolled around and a good sweat session was exactly what I needed.

Pure Barre Boston's Newbury Street facade

According to the website, "Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective way to change the shape of your body.  Using small, isometric movements at the ballet barre set to motivating music, Pure Barre lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms and burns fat in record-breaking time.  Clients see results in just 10 classes, lose inches in weeks and have fun doing it."

Candidly speaking, I was a bit skeptical... based on this definition, Pure Barre goes against my personal fitness philosophy.  As a strength & conditioning specialist, I promote lifting heavy things and utilizing a wide variety of movements.... but I reminded myself that I was trying something NEW (and this class definitely qualified as "different from my norm"!).

However, I will agree that when you stick with a consistent fitness routine (in this case, for at least 10 classes), chances of seeing changes in your body are pretty good.  And of course, I love the fact that it is all set to motivating music.

"Summer bodies are made in Winter" = TRUTH
The hard work you put in today will show on the beach in June!

The location was super easy to find and the space is absolutely adorable.  I checked in with some friendly faces behind the counter and put my coat and bag in a locker.  The lockers have keys already in them, which is perfect for someone like me who has at least 5 different locks but none of the combinations.

There was also a small retail section with clothes and accessories but I resisted the urge to look... since resisting the urge to PURCHASE wouldn't have been quite as successful!

the gorgeous interior of the studio

Class equipment included: a small non-weighted ball, resistance band, mat and light dumbbells.  Unless I missed a heavier stack of dumbbells, the weight choices were 2-, 3- and 5-lbs... I wasn't sure what to make of this but took a couple of options and headed in.

I was one of the last bloggers to arrive (shocking) so I grabbed a space by the door.  I happened to sit next to a Twitter friend of mine, Stephanie... so fun to connect with her in "real life"!

my class accessories

Fiona, the instructor, walked around to everyone and introduced herself, which I thought was a really nice touch.  After Jen (Boston Bachelorette) thanked us for coming and Lauren, the owner of Pure Barre Boston, welcomed us... we got started!

The class was perfectly choreographed in its format... after warming up, we went right into exercises that focused on various parts of the body... abs, arms, thighs and glutes.  After each segment, we'd stretch the muscles that we had just worked before moving onto the next muscle group.  We weren't at the barre as much as I thought we'd be though... we alternated between being at the barre and on the floor.

Many of the movements were done to the music and I liked challenging myself to try to stay on the beat even when I was ready to quit at certain moments.

Random fact that I discovered during class: alternating right and left "glute pulsing" to the beat of "Locked Out Of Heaven" definitely increases the fun factor of that exercise.

In Pure Barre, there is a big focus on "hip tucking", which I kept forgetting to do but Lauren kept remembering to gently remind me ;) and each movement is done at high repetitions, hence the low dumbbell weights.  Very different from my regular routine so I was totally feeling the burn.

Final thoughts
I thought it was a great class with awesome music. (Final cool-down to Bon Iver?  Yes, please!) It was very well-instructed and I felt some good soreness the next day! It was a fun experience and I highly recommend checking out Lauren and her team at Pure Barre Boston if you are looking to change up your workout.

Having said that, there are a few factors that would keep me from attending on a regular basis...
  1. Although the location IS easy to find (right off the green line), it just isn't the most convenient for ME to get to since it involves a few different modes of public transportation.
  2. I prefer to mix up the type of workouts I'm doing - running, weightlifting, dancing, stair climbing, circuit training... diversity is what keeps me motivated.  My workouts are also going to be influenced by what my current goals are.
  3. Finally, I can't see myself not incorporating heavy weightlifting into my workouts on a regular basis (my recent Intro to Strongman Training Workshop definitely confirmed that)... not only because of my personal fitness goals but for the simple fact that I just really like strength training.

I'm glad I tried it though and I know many people who absolutely LOVE Pure Barre classes, which is great. You won't get into a consistent routine by doing something you dislike, right?  Fitness should be FUN!  Luckily, there are a million different ways to get our sweat on... granted, they may not all be up our alley but part of the fun (for me anyway) is trying it out!

The bottom line, as far as exercise goes- if you enjoy something in particular and you are happy with the results you're getting, do whatever your heart desires.

And if your heart desires alternating right and left glute pulsing but you can't make it to a Pure Barre class... well then hey, download some Bruno Mars, turn it up and have yourself a party :)

Have you ever tried a barre class??

What's YOUR favorite way to sweat?

Ask Me Why I'm Blue... My Shift in Perspective

Have you ever gone to work simply expecting it to be just a regular "day in the life" and then had something extraordinary happen to you?  I mean, it really causes you to step back and re-evaluate your life?

I've been lucky to have some amazing, unexpected moments in my career thus far.  I'm literally in a position to create positive changes in how people feel about themselves and, let me tell you, there is no greater feeling than when someone tells me that I've impacted their life for the better.

However, a few days ago... a couple of brave, inspiring people impacted MY life for the better.

It happened while I was participating in a Colon Cancer Awareness program at work.  In February 2000, President Clinton officially dedicated March as National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, "Colon cancer is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the U.S.  Although 90% of new cases and 95% of deaths occur in people aged 50 and older, men and women of any age can get colon cancer."

The mayor of Cambridge, MA declared March 6th as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day and my company offered the awareness event as a means of encouraging employees to get screened and maintain a healthy lifestyle as a means of prevention.

Blue has become the color associated with colon cancer awareness, so we wore blue to show our support, had information tables, fitness demos (including Zumba and resistance bands), pedometer giveaways and a giant, inflatable colon setup where people could walk though and actually see the varying stages of the disease and the difference between a healthy colon and a diseased colon.

The Colon: Supersized

As I learned from reading the inside of the giant colon... the key to early detection is regular colon screenings.  A polyp (a fleshy growth in the lining of the colon) might be discovered in the screening and is usually benign; however, if left untreated, it can possibly develop into colon cancer.  Most patients survive colon cancer if it is found early and removed.

There were also a number of speakers during this event but two in particular had a profound impact on me:
  • both were females...
  • both were under the age of 50 (one of them was actually under the age of 30)...
  • and both had been diagnosed with colon cancer

1) The under-30 year old shared stories of numerous doctor's visits she had (since middle school!) due to various gastrointestinal issues.  Every time she went to the doctor, she was instructed to either increase her fiber intake, eat healthier or told that she had hemorrhoids or acid reflux.

She was vegetarian, ate more vegetables than anyone she knew, athletic, exercised regularly and had no family history of the disease.

It wasn't until she went to a specialist when the colon cancer was discovered... estimated to be about 8 years after it had started... and diagnosed at a stage that lists survival rates at 34%.

After undergoing  a colectomy and chemotherapy, she is now considered to be in remission and about to graduate from law school, which made me so happy to hear.

2) The 2nd speaker is a married mom of four young children, as well as a Registered Nurse.  Her colon cancer was discovered after her doctor suggested getting her first colonoscopy due to questionable blood test results for a separate issue.

Her cancer is very advanced and she is nearing the end of what current available medicine is able to provide.  Her regular chemo treatments leave her weak but she was strong enough to stand up and relay her story to us.

What she told us practically had me in tears... Here is a woman who has had to prepare herself AND her family for the inevitable (her life expectancy average for the stage of cancer she has is 15 months, which she is about halfway into), yet her attitude is more positive than many people I know.

Although she remains optimistic for a breakthrough in clinical trials to come down the pipeline for her, she continues to compose letters and videos for her family to remember her by.  In the meantime, she is choosing to live each day to its fullest... no regrets.

I got served perspective on a platter while hearing both of their stories and it really caused me to  take serious inventory of myself.... Do I sweat the small stuff or am I living each day to its fullest?  Do I choose to be positive regardless of the cards I'm dealt? Or do I allow myself to sometimes wallow in self-pity and excuses, which, really, only serves to dampen my spirit?

Here are two remarkable women, two of many people dealing with cancer, and remaining strong in the face of death... and both teaching me a lesson on embracing life and being grateful for the opportunity to LIVE.

I recently read a great, timely blog post from Marc and Angel:

The strength of these two women to tell their stories is extraordinary and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to hear them.

They have inspired me to:
live each moment consciously...
to not be in such a hurry to spend time I'll never get back...
to be braver in my actions instead of simply toeing the line of my comfort zone...
and to explore, discover and DO instead of sitting, waiting and watching.

Music Monday - Dance Mix Workout Playlist (Part 2)

Music has always been one of my biggest motivators, especially when it comes to exercise.  I used to teach spin classes and would put a good amount of effort into creating playlists that I knew would energize my class participants (admittedly, more than any instructor really should ha).  However, I'm well aware that a good song can push someone to work even harder... whether or not they realize it :)

Since last month's Music Monday was a dance/hip hop mix, I initially was planning to change gears and do something different for February.

But then T.I. came on my iTunes shuffle...

...followed by Fatman Scoop...

...which of course got me thinking of other fun dance songs I could create a workout playlist from.... and before I knew it, Part 2 was born!

As in Part 1, most of these songs (with the exception of a couple) aren't all that current but who cares... if your motivation to work out - or to just get through Monday - is lagging, throw a few of these on... trust me, you won't be the first person to start dancing on your spin bike ;)

Music Monday - February 2013 - Dance Mix, Part 2
  1. Bom Bom (feat. The Teaching) ~ Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
  2. Ghosts-n-Stuff ~ Deadmau5
  3. Emerge ~ Fischerspooner
  4. We Own The Night (feat. Luciana) [Original Mix] ~ Tiesto & Wolfgang Gartner
  5. Little Bad Girl (feat. Taio Cruz & Ludacris) ~ David Guetta
  6. Full Moon (feat. Common) ~ Armand Van Helden
  7. Alright (feat. Machel Montano) ~ Pitbull
  8. Ball (feat. Lil Wayne) ~ T.I.
  9. Don't Touch Me Now (Throw Da Water On 'Em) ~ Busta Rhymes
  10. Tambourine ~ Eve
  11. Drop (feat. Fatman Scoop) ~ Magoo & Timbaland
  12. Countdown ~ Beyonce
  13. Clocks ~ Rhythms del Mundo & Coldplay (cool-down to a great version of the original song w/ a little added Cuban flair)

What gets you motivated to work a little harder during your workout??

Batch Cooking: Fruit-on-the-Bottom Yogurt (ok... and a Chocolate Version)

So, I mentioned in my last blog post that one of my "snowed-in activities" during Blizzard Nemo was to try a new recipe.  I found a really SIMPLE recipe for homemade fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt (fittingly, from Simple Bites which, btw, is an awesome blog with great recipes so check it out!).

I grew up eating fruit on the bottom yogurt so I was psyched to discover a much healthier (and tastier) version than the store-bought versions that I used to eat.

Not only do I see this becoming a nice complement to my breakfast BUT I quickly realized that throwing it in the freezer for a couple of hours turns it into yummy after-dinner slushy goodness and helps curb my "I-need-something-sweet-and-frozen-right-NOW" cravings.

So far, I've only tried this recipe with raspberries and strawberries (2 separate batches) and they were dee-lish.  Next time I may get a little crazy and whip up a mixed berries batch.

Fruit-on-the-Bottom Yogurt

Ingredients
  • ½ lb fruit, peeled and chopped if needed
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • pinch salt
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp cold water
  • 1 ¾ cups plain Greek yogurt (so far my personal fave is Fage but still taste-tasting!)
  1. Make compote:
    1. Place fruit, honey and salt in a medium-sized saucepan.
    2. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently.
    3. Stir together cornstarch and water until cornstarch is dissolved. Pour into fruit mixture.
    4. Simmer 3-5 minutes, stirring often, until thickened and no longer cloudy.
    5. Allow to cool before layering with yogurt.

  1. Make yogurt:
    1. Add 2 Tbsp fruit compote to a jar or plastic container.
    2. Top with ¼ cup yogurt.
    3. Refrigerate, covered, for up to one week.
(Makes 7 servings)

or, um, 3 servings in my case...

Substitutes:
  • Go green… great way to recycle small jars!
  • Experiment with the fruit-to-yogurt ratio; the amounts in the recipe are probably perfect for kids but I needed to increase them a bit for myself.
  • Try different fruits based on preference and what’s in season.
  • Alternate layering fruit and yogurt with granola to create a parfait!
  • Greek yogurt has a higher protein content than most other yogurts, and personally I just like it better, but this would definitely work with your favorite regular plain yogurt too.
Recipe adapted from SimpleBites.net

Ok... so no time to make fruit compote (even though it seriously takes minutes) but not in love with plain yogurt?

OR in need of a chocolate fix...?

I give you...

The Chocolate Yogurt Version

  • Add 1/4 - 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt to a bowl
  • Add 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Stir yogurt and cocoa powder together until blended
  • Add Truvia to taste (or sweetener of your choice)
  • Top with 1 Tbsp shredded coconut

You're welcome :)

There are so many options when it comes to making plain Greek yogurt a little more fun to eat... what are some of your tried and true recipes??

Staying Healthy While Snowed In!

As a New Englander, I've been through my fair share of blizzards.  They have this annoying way of messing up plans, don't they?  Especially fitness plans.

Nemo- the thunder-snowing, crazy wind-blowing, nor'easter that's been laying into the east coast since yesterday (causing thousands of shelves of milk and bread to be cleaned out)- is no exception.

Unfortunately, most businesses - gyms included - had to call it quits earlier than usual yesterday.  Because when your Governor bans all cars from the roads after 4pm or else you'll be fined $500 (or, ya know, jail time)... you listen.

Considering the snow is still accumulating, public transportation is still suspended and the no-driving ban for Massachusetts is still in effect, the chances of most people around here making it out today at ALL, let alone go somewhere to exercise (other than shoveling or snowshoeing) are slim to none.

Is it more challenging to keep up a healthy lifestyle while under "snowed-in circumstances"?

Well, sure.  You're cooped up in your house, bored, nowhere to go and much more likely to get sucked into a marathon of mindless TV shows and movies... not to mention chow down on unhealthy "comfort food" that you might not normally be tempted to eat.

But is it possible?

Absolutely.

You have a choice...

  • You can either choose to use a situation like a snowstorm to throw you off track ("Can't work out today, roads are closed!") OR you can choose to move on to plan B, think outside the box and try fun, new no-gym-required exercises.
  • You can either choose to stock up on processed grocery items OR you can select healthier options  and get creative in the kitchen finding ways to make your favorite "comfort foods" more nutritious.

The choice is yours.

I wasn't able to do the exact workout I was hoping to do this morning because my apartment isn't equipped to mimic my gym... but one skill that I've honed as a personal trainer is the ability to modify workouts on the fly to fit a particular situation.  So I created a simple but effective full-body workout that took me less than 30 minutes to do, from warm-up to cool-down...

Throw on some fun workout music and challenge others in your house to do this with you!

"The Nemo" Workout

If you haven't heard of some of these exercises, or need a refresher on proper technique, check out the exercise glossary at the end of this post.

Other options to get moving?

  • walking or running up and down your stairs
  • shoveling your driveway/steps/sidewalk (and THEN shoveling a neighbor's)
  • breaking out a fitness DVD (or dusting off Wii Fit) that you haven't done in a while

"The Nemo" Kitchen Experiment

After my workout, I decided to try my hand at a new recipe for an online weight management program that I'm running at work.  It's a staple that I grew up with but recently found a much healthier version....

Fruit-on-the Bottom Yogurt... yum!

I've said this before BUT a recipe needs to be virtually fool-proof in order for me to make it.  (And for it to be edible by anyone other than me.) This recipe couldn't be easier and it's better for you (and tastier, IMHO) than store-bought varieties. Definitely being added to my batch cooking recipe repertoire :)

As soon as I get the recipe typed up I'll be sure to post it!

"The Nemo" Exercise Glossary:
Air Squats
Spiderman Lunges
Glute Bridges
Pushups
Lunge to Knee Lift/Oblique Twist (I added a slight twist at the top, bringing opposite elbow to knee)
Dips
Mountain Climbers
Plank Butt Kickers (assume this plank position and alternate bending knees to bring heels to glutes)
Pull-up Burpees (combines a pull-up with a burpee).  No pull-up bar?  No problem... Just do burpees!

Tell me... how do YOU fit in fitness at home??
